Moving Our Community FWD

The Idea

Studying Africa and its cultures is part of the North Carolina middle school curriculum. I propose to provide lesson plans to Social Studies teachers that encourage students to create web content that highlights the plight in the Horn of Africa and the FWD mission.

The Specifics

The grant money received will be used to purchase equipment used for creating web content. It will also be used to provide materials for teachers county-wide to implement their own lessons.

This idea will begin in one school and spread to the county, and the State.
1-short lesson on FWD
2-in groups, students will discuss an aspect that they would like to highlight in a short video clip.
3- research/ storyboard
4-create a short PSA.
5-videos will then be posted online.
6- Students share videos using social media
(Lesson Plan will be included on video site)
7- repeat county-wide (I will present to teachers county-wide)
8- repeat throughout NC (web propagation, direct mailings)

A middle class is developing in many African nations. It is good to see because the news media doesn't show thevworld positive changes. Vote for My nephew, Alan's plan.

I agree with KOP. Some of the other ideas don't even meet the original goal of the initiative. I love that this idea targets students who are developing their goals, dreams, and passions for the future; educating these students about crises in Africa could create a group with a passion to help generate long-term change in Africa. Additionally, it has the potential to spread greatly with the use of social media. Great idea!!!

I love that this idea is sustainable for the longer term rather than being just a one-off. It doesn't have to be limited to just this crisis, but can be repeated each year with a new group of students and whatever the current development issue is in Africa. While the current crisis is significant, only longer-term change on the continent can prevent this situation from occurring again and again. This is the kind of grassroots idea that can help get us there!!

I think this is a great idea! There are so many things out there that need to be known. The web, at this time, is the greatest social tool there is. Infinite information at you fingertips, or voice command now as well as virtual reality! Africa is a very old culture that has many aspects in life that are unknown to a good percentage of persons. Thank you for the ideas and the drive to get things going in the right direction!
