The Horn of Africa is suffering from the worst famine in 60 years, causing severe food shortages. While improvement has been made--reducing the amount facing starvation down to 250,000--progress is in danger of stalling due to security issues.
I propose a series of short public service announcements (broadcast on social media) that will raise awareness about the three interlocking issues of famine, war and drought in East Africa. The clips will demonstrate how famine relief efforts work, to raise awareness for the current crisis. People need to know that famine relief is more than offering food for a day. Medical help is also provided, such as immunizations and treatment against diarrhea, measles and malaria. In the last week, militants have once again forbade humanitarian groups from distributing aid, so more awareness is needed to create respectful, mutually agreeable solutions to the situation.
