Grow The Future: Farmers, Famine and Food Security

Grow The Future: Farmers, Famine and Food Security

The Idea

The Horn of Africa is suffering from the worst famine in 60 years, causing severe food shortages. While improvement has been made--reducing the amount facing starvation down to 250,000--progress is in danger of stalling due to security issues.

The Specifics

I propose a series of short public service announcements (broadcast on social media) that will raise awareness about the three interlocking issues of famine, war and drought in East Africa. The clips will demonstrate how famine relief efforts work, to raise awareness for the current crisis. People need to know that famine relief is more than offering food for a day. Medical help is also provided, such as immunizations and treatment against diarrhea, measles and malaria. In the last week, militants have once again forbade humanitarian groups from distributing aid, so more awareness is needed to create respectful, mutually agreeable solutions to the situation.

Seriously! I have access to farmers in East Africa, and to the scientists and environmentalists at UC Davis who have been working on these issues. It's time to be inspiring and look for solutions. Everyone is tired of protesting and struggling. Let's do thizz!!!!

So true, my friend.

I have already sponsored the We Want Peace initiative with Emmanuel Jal and Kibera Slumdawg in Kenya. They are travelling around hosting peace talks with elders and community groups in the region. Citizens and stakeholders are texting in their support to create safe zones to prevent violence such as occurred during the 2007 elections. I also sponsored a girl whose home was burned down in the election violence, relocating her to an orphanage and paying her school fees every year. In the process, I ended up adopting the whole orphanage and I am trying to start a non-profit to further some of these projects. http://www.twiga-usa.org

Peace is every step!
